ED – Can also mean Estrogen Dominance
Yes, we send out a CorePsychPodcast discussing estrogen dominance in some detail just last week.
From our vantage point: estrogen dominance is a big deal. We see estrogenically enhanced problems everyday, not once in awhile, with those who suffer chronic, “incurable” psych problems.
Some may say… “Yawnnnn, no problem. Lemme stay asleep!”
But those in the know are concerned about the stealth estrogen numbers, and wonder about the origin of all the problems with PCOS [polycystic ovaries] and early/late onset with menarche [when periods begin] in adolescent women. They ask: “How come we have this problem so early…?”
Check out this interesting article from the LA Times, just this last week.
Scientists issue warning about chemical in plastic: by Maria Cone 8/2/07
In an unusual effort targeting a single chemical, several dozen
scientists on Thursday issued a strongly worded consensus statement
warning that an estrogen-like compound in plastic is likely to be
causing an array of serious reproductive disorders in people. The compound, bisphenol A or BPA, is one of the highest-volume
chemicals in the world and has found its way into the bodies of most
human beings.
Used to make hard plastic, BPA can seep from beverage containers and
other materials. It is used in all polycarbonate plastic baby bottles,
as well as other rigid plastic items, including large water cooler
containers, sports bottles and microwave oven dishes, along with canned
food liners and some dental sealants for children. The scientists — including four from federal health agencies –
reviewed about 700 studies before concluding that people are exposed to
levels of the chemical exceeding those that harm lab animals. Infants
and fetuses are most vulnerable, they said.
And she goes on to document:
Jerrold Heindel, a scientist with the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences who organized a meeting last fall to
begin drafting the statement, said even though there have been no human
studies of BPA, there is now so much animal data that the 38 experts
believe that potential human damage is likely. More than 150 studies
have found health effects in animals exposed to low doses.“We know what doses the animals were given, and when we look at humans,
we see blood levels within that range or actually higher, which is a
cause of concern and should stimulate more human research,” he said.
Sounds compelling to me… and do think of the new, broader term: xenoestrogens.
Xenoestrogens Matter
Do take a look at this xenoestrogen link for estrogen answers: there are at least 17 different products – including those ubiquitous plastic water bottles we all take to the gym, and leave in our cars in the hot summer sun.
- 4-Methylbenzylidine camphor (4-MBC) (sunscreen lotions)
- hydroxy-anisole butyrate (food preservation)
- atrazine (weedkiller)
- bisphenol-A (food preservation, plasticizers)
- DEHP
- dieldrin (insecticide)
- DDT (insecticide)
- hexachlorocyclohexane (insecticide)
- endosulfan (insecticide)
- erythrosine, Red Dye No.3
- heptachlor
- methoxychlor (insecticide)
- Polychlorinated biphenyls,(PCB)s (lubricants, adhesives, paints)
- p-nonylphenol (in PVC products and byproduct from detergents and spermicides)
- parabens (lotions)
- phenosulfothiazine
- phthalates (plastic softener)
Summer Cooking
Cooking hot water plastic bottles in the summer car can give us a bigger hit of xenoestrogen phthalates [#17], and can add to hormone and cancer risks even before the children are born! Best to forget that *hot water bottle* if you are pregnant or nursing… or if you are having sexual problems, or *hormone issues.*
Perhaps we should forget about that disposable bottle under any circumstances.
Might be more convenient, but let’s think about the real price of convenience for our children and ourselves.
